QEGS Celebrates European Week of Languages with a Festive and Flavourful Showcase

26th September 2024

This week at QEGS, students enthusiastically embraced the European Week of Languages, diving into a vibrant array of activities designed to celebrate linguistic diversity and cultural richness. From engaging language taster sessions to a delightful culinary experience, the school was alive with excitement and learning.

The festivities began on Monday as students tackled the challenge of learning basic Arabic, instructed by their peers—a commendable feat that demonstrated their growing language skills. Lunchtime featured a delicious menu inspired by West African cuisine, including chicken jollof, okra, and malva pudding, providing a flavoursome nod to the region.

On Tuesday, the spotlight turned to Polish, with students taking the reins to teach their classmates. Their detailed lessons set a high standard, which was followed on Wednesday by a delightful lunch featuring traditional Polish dishes, further enriching the cultural experience.

Thursday marked the highly anticipated European Day of Languages, spotlighting French. Students enjoyed crêpes for dessert while participating in simultaneous taster lessons for Urdu and Hindi, as well as Ukrainian. The lunchtime excitement continued with the Foreign Cinema Club, where boys savoured snacks while watching a foreign film, immersing themselves in different cultures.

In the Juniors, a lively All Day Teacher Tag event had students learning how to say “Hello” in multiple languages whenever they were tagged by a teacher. The day was made even more festive with a flag fancy dress competition, where students proudly donned the colours of their chosen flags.

As the week continues, students eagerly anticipate Friday’s activities, which promise more language learning and a delicious Chinese lunch. The European Week of Languages at QEGS has proven to be a resounding success, fostering an appreciation for global cultures and languages among the student body.
