Under sunny but breezy conditions on GSAL’s 3G pitch, QEGS came into the match determined to improve on their previous defeat to Durham. Captain Hunter and vice-captain McCann ensured the squad was primed during a sharp warm-up, setting the tone for the opening exchanges.
The first 20 minutes saw QEGS impose themselves physically and tactically, applying relentless pressure that yielded multiple kickable penalties and a yellow card for GSAL. By the 20-minute mark, QEGS led 12-0, with centre Walsh and No. 8 Gibson making their presence felt through dominant tackles.
QEGS’ attacking structures began to click, probing GSAL’s defensive line with repeated threats. A potential try was thwarted by a last-ditch deliberate knock-on, though QEGS soon capitalised elsewhere. Their set-piece superiority translated into points when hooker Millican finished a driving maul to open the scoring.
GSAL attempted to bypass QEGS’ line-speed with tactical kicks, but the QEGS back three — Kalambay, Wright, and Hunter — managed the backfield effectively, launching counter-attacks and maintaining defensive solidity. Kalambay later scored a scintillating individual try, intercepting a GSAL carrier and racing down the near touchline to make it 22-0 at halftime.
Coaches emphasised discipline at the break, reminding players of last year’s near-comeback by GSAL when QEGS had trailed 0-21 at the same stage. QEGS responded emphatically in the second half. Scrum-half Wareham forced his way over for a try, followed by Hunter weaving through multiple defenders to score under the posts, converting his own effort to extend the lead to 34-0. Replacement forward Bostwick completed the scoring with a strong finish down the far touchline.
The only blemish on an otherwise polished performance was a red card for Gibson, who made direct head contact in another huge tackle. Returning from a long-term injury, Gibson had been outstanding throughout but overcommitted in his eagerness to make an impact.
QEGS’ blend of attacking creativity and defensive discipline underlined their quality and focus, making them worthy winners. Next up, they face Kirkham at the weekend, followed by St Joseph’s.
