Year 12s Gain Insight into Clinical Science Careers with NHS Expert Dr Stephen Gibbons

17th October 2024

Tuesday afternoon, our Year 12 students had the unique opportunity to hear from Dr Stephen Gibbons, a distinguished clinical scientist in the NHS, who shared insights into his career and the vital role clinical scientists play in healthcare. His talk provided a fascinating glimpse into an alternative pathway to consultant clinical practice, one that many students may not have previously considered.

During the session, Dr Gibbons explained the day-to-day responsibilities of a clinical scientist and highlighted how this career path differs from, yet complements, the work of doctors and other healthcare professionals. He outlined the training involved, the diverse specializations within the field, and the impact clinical scientists have on patient care through their expertise in diagnostics, treatment planning, and research.

Dr Gibbons also focused on how students can pursue a career in clinical science, discussing the necessary qualifications, skills, and steps involved in accessing this rewarding alternative to the traditional medical route. He encouraged students to think broadly about their futures in healthcare and emphasized the growing demand for clinical scientists in the NHS.

Our Year 12 students were deeply engaged throughout the talk, asking insightful questions and gaining a new perspective on the range of careers available within the healthcare sector.

We are incredibly grateful to Dr Stephen Gibbons for giving up his time to share his knowledge and experience with our students. It was an inspiring session, opening up a wealth of possibilities for those interested in science and healthcare.
