QEGS Wakefield are heading back to Twickenham after a stunning comeback victory over Warwick in the Continental Tyres Schools Cup semi-final at Aylesbury RFC. In a game that had everything—drama, resilience, and individual brilliance—QEGS overturned a 12-point deficit to secure a place in the final with a last-gasp penalty, sealing a 20-19 triumph.
The atmosphere at Aylesbury was electric, with Warwick supporters in full voice, but QEGS silenced the crowd early as fly-half Barker slotted a penalty to give his side a 3-0 lead. It was a tight first half, dominated by tactical discipline and defensive grit, until a cruel bounce from a Warwick kick allowed them to cross in the corner just before the break. That score shifted the momentum, sending Warwick into halftime with a 7-3 advantage.
QEGS head coach Mr Cook reassured his side during the interval, reminding them they were still in control. However, Warwick struck again early in the second half, capitalising on a penalty to extend their lead to 12-3. Matters worsened when captain and No. 8 Bailey had to leave the field following a head knock. Inspired to make up for the loss of their talisman, QEGS responded with sheer determination.
Centre Dale bulldozed through Warwick’s defensive line time and again, while flanker Walsh was denied a try by the finest of margins. The breakthrough finally came when replacement winger Kalambay dived over in the corner. Barker then nailed a stunning touchline conversion to bring QEGS within four points.
Warwick struck back almost immediately, adding seven more points to make it 19-10, but QEGS refused to fold. In the 66th minute, full-back Hunter produced a moment of individual magic, weaving past multiple defenders for a sensational solo try under the posts. Barker converted, setting up a nail-biting finale.
With seconds remaining, Dale’s relentless carrying drew another high tackle, earning QEGS a penalty within range. Barker stepped up under immense pressure and delivered, splitting the uprights to give his side a 20-19 lead. QEGS then closed out the match with composure, booting the ball into touch to confirm their place at Twickenham.
The final whistle sparked euphoric celebrations among players, parents, staff, and Old Savilians. This QEGS side now becomes only the third team in the school’s history to reach the national final at both U15 and U18 levels.
Now, all eyes turn to Allianz Park on 13th March, where QEGS will face reigning champions Harrow for the ultimate prize.
Could this be the year they go all the way? We shall see!
