Freeston and Savile Triumph in Heated Inter-House Debating Semi-Finals

5th December 2024

This week, QEGS saw fierce intellectual competition in the Inter-House Debating Semi-Finals, as pupils tackled thought-provoking topics with eloquence and passion. The debates, held on Monday 2nd December, showcased the incredible skill, critical thinking, and teamwork of our students.

Semi-Final 1: Freeston vs Cave
Topic: Homework should not be set daily
In the first semi-final, Freeston, arguing in favour of the motion, faced off against Cave. Freeston’s victory came down to their ability to utilise more of their allotted time to present a wide-ranging argument. Cave countered with a sharp, concise argument and strong questioning, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide.

Semi-Final 2: Savile vs Bentley
Topic: Celebrities should be considered role models
The second semi-final saw Savile debating in favour of the motion against Bentley. Savile’s victory was attributed to their coherent argument and effective use of case studies to reinforce their points. Bentley made an admirable effort, laying out a clear understanding of the topic, but Savile’s overall presentation gave them the edge.

Congratulations to Freeston and Savile for progressing to the final! The competition so far has been a testament to the calibre of our students’ debating skills, and we can’t wait to see what they bring to the ultimate showdown.
