In Years 3 to 6, there is a great focus on the 3 core subjects of Mathematics, English and Science where we use much of the latest 2014 National Curriculum Updates to form our schemes of work.
In Year 3, the delivery of the curriculum and class sizes is adapted to give extra support where it is needed. In Years 4 to 6, boys are taught in mixed ability classes but set for English and mathematics, to allow boys to be enthused and challenged in the classroom relative to their attainment levels.
In Years 5 and 6 boys are encouraged to be independent and organised in readiness for Senior School, as boys move from classroom to classroom and recognise different teaching styles.
In Science the scheme of work is drafted to fit in line with the units of study laid out in the National Curriculum 2014 guidelines. In Years 3 to 6 French is the chosen Modern Foreign language.
Non-core subjects also follow a topic based approach and here again the units are taken from the National Curriculum 2014 documents and the use of ICT is incorporated into all aspects of the curriculum, as is the 'Helping Children Achieve More' previously 'Every Child Matters' agenda.
The school places a good deal of emphasis on Sports and the Arts and this is reflected in the curriculum where additional time is allocated to these areas which in turn has allowed pupils to compete and gain recognition at local, regional and national level.
Assessments of pupil progress in relation to the set curriculum and Schemes of Work are carried out throughout the year to enable the school to analyse pupil performance against national standards.
