Year 12 and Year 13 D&T Students Gain First-Hand Industry Insight at JCB World Headquarters

16th January 2025

Year 12 and Year 13 Design & Technology students recently visited the JCB World Headquarters for a guided tour, gaining valuable insights into the world of manufacturing and engineering.

The visit began at the Story of JCB museum, where students explored the company’s history and innovations. From its foundation in 1945 to its development into a global leader in construction equipment manufacturing, the museum provided a comprehensive look at JCB’s journey and achievements.

Following the museum visit, students were taken on a walking tour of the factory floor. They had the unique opportunity to observe the production of JCB’s iconic Backhoe Loader, from the fabrication of parts to the final assembly on the Just-In-Time (JIT) production line. The tour offered a close-up view of advanced manufacturing techniques, automation, and efficient workflow systems.

This visit provided an excellent real-world context for the examination content students have been learning in class, showcasing the practical application of design and technology principles. Observing the processes behind large-scale production allowed students to see concepts such as lean manufacturing and precision engineering in action.

The day was both educational and inspiring, reinforcing the connection between classroom learning and industry practices. The Design & Technology department is grateful to JCB for providing such an enriching experience and for supporting the students’ understanding of the field.
