World Book Day is an annual event designed to promote reading amongst children and young people around the world. At QEGS, we would like the boys to develop a love of reading and to read for pleasure – both at school and at home.

To celebrate World Book Day 2023, the school organised a wide range of exciting activities for the boys to take part in. 

In the weeks preceding World Book Day, the boys were invited to take part in a House competition which involved building a scene from a book using Lego. This was a joint competition, involving boys from both Junior and Senior Sections. The overall winner of the competition was Year 6 student, Harry B (Cave), who created a Lego model depicting Macbeth’s final battle with Macduff. Harry’s attention to detail was phenomenal and he was a deserved winner of the competition. In second place was Ethan K-C (Year 4, Freeston), who was inspired by Daniel Defoe’s book, Robinson Crusoe. Ethan’s Lego creation included a campfire, a rowing boat and two hungry-looking sharks. Theo L’s (Year 5, Savile) portrayal of Julia Donaldson’s ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ was highly commended and just missed out on a top 3 spot.  

On World Book Day itself, the boys arrived at school wearing costumes inspired by some of their favourite adjectives. There were some fantastic costumes on display, with the boys thinking creatively about how best to represent their chosen adjective. 

We also held the final of this year’s Speaking and Reading Competition on World Book Day. All boys in the Junior Section took part in this competition, with two boys from each class advancing to the final. The standard of performance in this year’s competition was incredibly high. Guest judge, Adam Cunis, was amazed with how confident the boys were and had a really difficult job of selecting a winner in each category.

Year 3 – Harry G

Year 4 – Horacio W

Year 5 – Rahim G

Year 6 – Raamis Z

The overall winners of the competition were Horacio and Rahim. Horacio’s reading of Robert Frost’s poem ‘The Road Not Taken’ was absolutely outstanding and Rahim’s speech writing and public speaking skills were exceptional. Well done to these two boys – and to all of the boys who took part in this year’s final.
