QEGS 1st XV Narrowly Miss Out in National Schools’ Cup Quarter-Final

4th December 2025

QEGS’ 1st XV fell agonisingly short in the Continental Tyres National Schools’ Cup quarter-final, going down 18-14 to Campion School in a thrilling contest just north-east of London.

Riding high on the back of last week’s impressive victory at Durham, QEGS travelled south confident and ready for another tough away test. With clear skies and crisp winter sunshine setting the scene, the visitors made the perfect start. A well-worked team move finished by vice-captain McCann, who has been a standout performer both on and off the field this season, put QEGS 7-0 ahead after Hunter added the conversion.

Campion responded quickly, scoring a try of their own and a yellow card for QEGS fly-half English added pressure on the visitors. Despite being down to 14 men, QEGS headed into half-time with a narrow two-point lead, showing remarkable composure.

The second half belonged to the home side, who scored a converted try to take the lead for the first time. Two further penalties widened the gap, with QEGS’ discipline proving costly in a game that was finely balanced throughout.

Trailing by 11 points, QEGS fought back valiantly. A well-taken try from captain Hunter, converted expertly, brought them within striking distance. However, despite probing until the final whistle, the team could not find the decisive score, leaving the final score 18-14 in Campion’s favour.

While the defeat was disappointing, QEGS can take plenty of positives from the season. Four of their five matches have been on the road – away to Hill House in Doncaster, GSAL, Durham, and now Campion – providing constant tests of resilience and character. The squad has repeatedly risen to the challenge, demonstrating skill, determination and the ability to compete at the highest level of school rugby.

The season is not yet over, with fixtures against RGS Newcastle and GSAL to close out the campaign, giving the team further opportunities to showcase their talent and build on the foundations of a strong season.
