QEGS Wakefield survived a major scare to book their place in the Last 32 of the National Schools Cup, edging past a spirited Woodhouse Grove side 22–14 in a gripping encounter.
The home side made the brighter start, dominating early possession and territory. Their pressure told when back-row forward Powell powered over for the opening try after sustained attacking phases. Woodhouse Grove defended resolutely for much of the half, but QEGS’ persistence paid off again when No.8 Gibson crashed over from close range, with captain Hunter adding the conversion to make it 12–0.
At that point, QEGS appeared in control. However, a crucial try for Woodhouse Grove just before half-time shifted the momentum, sending the visitors into the break with renewed belief.
The second half belonged largely to Woodhouse Grove, who camped deep in QEGS territory for long spells but were guilty of missing several gilt-edged chances. Against the run of play, QEGS struck a decisive blow when fly-half English seized on a loose ball inside his own half. Showing superb composure and footballing skill, he controlled the bouncing ball before sprinting clear to score a remarkable coast-to-coast try, which Hunter duly converted for a 19–7 lead.
That score should have settled QEGS, but Woodhouse Grove hit back once more with a well-deserved try, reflecting their dominance after the interval. Discipline issues continued to plague the home side and only a series of fierce defensive stands on their own line prevented Woodhouse Grove from completing the comeback.
With the game finely poised, Hunter again proved the difference, slotting a vital penalty to extend QEGS’ lead to eight points – crucially putting the result beyond a single converted try. From there, the hosts managed the final minutes well to see out the contest and secure their progression.
Afterwards, coach Mr Cook admitted his side had been fortunate to advance, saying they were “lucky” to escape with victory. Still, in knockout rugby, results matter most – and QEGS live to fight another day.
