QEGS 1st XV End Historic Season with Impressive Display at Sedbergh Super Tens

1st April 2025

The QEGS 1st XV brought their remarkable season to a close with a strong performance at the prestigious Sedbergh Super Tens tournament. Competing against some of the country’s top rugby schools—including Sedbergh, Millfield, and Kirkham—QEGS faced a tough challenge but rose to the occasion with grit and determination.

Day 1 saw QEGS grouped with Felsted, Brighton, and Ipswich. The squad began with a confident and professional victory over Felsted before taking on newly crowned Rosslyn Park winners, Brighton. A stunning first-half performance saw QEGS lead 24-10 at the break, but a late Brighton comeback, aided by some contentious refereeing decisions, saw the opposition snatch victory by a single point (24-25). Undeterred, QEGS regrouped and delivered a dominant display against Ipswich, a team they had faced in the National Cup semi-finals at U15 level. This crucial win secured their place in the Cup competition for Day 2—an incredible achievement in itself.

Drawn into what could only be described as the ‘Group of Death,’ QEGS faced formidable opponents in Kirkham (Super 10s Champions 2022/2023), RGS High Wycombe (National Cup Semi-Finalists), and hosts Sedbergh (Rosslyn Park Plate Winners). The challenge was immense, and while results didn’t go their way, the squad battled valiantly and made their mark against some of the most prestigious rugby schools in the country. Every player should take immense pride in their efforts.

Beyond the competition itself, this tournament marked a poignant moment for the departing Year 13s. For them, it was the final time they would wear the iconic Black and Gold jersey—a journey that began in Pre-Prep at just three years old and saw them represent the school for over a decade. With two National Cup Finals at Twickenham under their belt and an outstanding showing at Sedbergh Tens to close out their school careers, this team has set an example of commitment, resilience, and dedication that will inspire future generations.

QEGS would like to extend heartfelt thanks to every player for their contributions to school rugby and the wider community. You have left an incredible legacy—one that will be remembered for years to come.

P.S. A huge shoutout to Mr. Mark Bailey, our dedicated pitch-side reporter throughout the season! His brilliant content and unwavering support have been invaluable. As his final contribution, he’s captured a special moment—this group’s last huddle together after their final match. Thank you, Mr. B!
