Students from both QEGS and WGHS attended the annual Polecon event in Methodist Central Hall, Westminster. Attending the event were major politicians from all major parties, who spoke on their political views and ideas before taking questions from the audience. Students from Year 12 and Year 13 got an early morning train from Westgate, and walked from Kings Cross to the conference centre via iconic areas of national importance, such as Trafalgar Square and Downing Street. On the timetable were a number of high profile political names. Jacob Rees Mogg opened the conference, and spoke on his views and perspectives, before Richard Tice spoke on the rise of Reform UK. Certain other big names spoke, such as Alastair Campbell, the former Labour Party spin doctor, and current host of The Rest is Politics podcast. Other perhaps less well known speakers included Pete Wishart, deputy leader of the SNP in The House of Commons, who argued the case for Scottish Independence, Sian Berry, who represented the Greens, and Lord Dubs, who spoke about the importance of human rights. All attendees were given the option to fill out a form on their political views before the conference, and these views were all collected and revealed that amongst the students attending from schools across the country, the Liberal Democrats were the most popular party, which would have delighted the Lib Dem speaker (and deputy leader) Daisy Cooper. Students enjoyed a grand day out and were able to hear famous politicians in person, and understand the views they hold. Students were also able to ask politicians questions on issues that they see as important, such as the environment, or Gaza. The trip to London was no doubt beneficial to their politics studies, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
