QEGS Celebrates Achievements at Annual Prize Giving

18th November 2024

The Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS) community gathered for its annual Prize Giving ceremony, a highlight of Founders’ Day, celebrating the school’s rich heritage and the achievements of its pupils. Held in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the event reflected the ethos and ambitions of the school, which was established in 1591 to promote “grammer and other good learnynge.”

The ceremony showcased the breadth of success achieved by QEGS pupils over the past academic year. Academic excellence was a key focus, with 53% of GCSE grades awarded at 9–7 (equivalent to A*/A) and a high proportion of A-Level pupils attaining A*-B grades. These results were complemented by outstanding individual performances, with many pupils surpassing expectations through their dedication and hard work.

Beyond academics, the event highlighted achievements in the arts, sports, and community involvement. Drama and music featured prominently, with a moving school production of Carousel and standout musical performances, including the Year 8 rock band, “Metal Dogs.”

Sporting success continued to enhance QEGS’ reputation, with pupils excelling at both national and international levels. Highlights included strong performances in rugby and hockey, as well as individual triumphs in athletics, taekwondo, and football.

The school’s commitment to a well-rounded education was evident in the numerous enrichment opportunities offered throughout the year. Pupils participated in international trips to destinations such as South Africa, Berlin, and Naples, while locally, they made significant contributions through charity fundraising and volunteering. The newly refurbished Sixth Form Centre was also celebrated for fostering collaboration and community among pupils and staff.

Looking ahead, the ceremony addressed an exciting transformation for QEGS. From September 2026, the school will merge with WGHS and WGPPS to form a co-educational diamond model. This change aims to preserve the best of the school’s traditions while embracing opportunities for innovation and growth.

The Prize Giving ceremony served as a celebration not only of the pupils’ achievements but also of the dedication of staff, parents, and the wider QEGS community. The afternoon concluded with a standing ovation, a fitting tribute to a year defined by tradition, progress, and excellence.
