Building Leadership Skills & Creating an Inclusive Community: The Sixth Form Advantage

6th November 2024

Unlock your potential in our Sixth Form! Our students excel academically while building essential skills for future success. From rigorous academics to leadership opportunities, the Sixth Form equips you with the knowledge, confidence, and experience to thrive in any path you choose.

In this feature, we speak with our Heads of Houses, who play a key role in fostering inclusion within our QEGS community. They share how they work alongside staff to create a supportive environment, embracing diversity and ensuring every voice is heard. Through the core values of Care, Contribute, and Aspire, our student leaders are helping shape a school culture that celebrates individuality, fosters a safe and welcoming space, and empowers everyone to reach their full potential.

Head of Savile: The youngest students are the future of the house – we all care deeply about it, and want Saville to continue performing well, even after all of us have left.  Therefore, it is absolutely imperative that younger people in the school are made to feel at home and comfortable in the house setting.  Treating them with all the respect that we would treat a boy higher up the school is vital, as is encouraging them to step out of their comfort zone and try something new.  Indeed, this is why I would like to host one of year 7’s house assemblies, (where everyone in a particular year group that is in the same house gets together to talk all things house-related), as I feel making yourself visible and accessible to all is the  best way, to ensure that everyone gets everything they can, out of the system.

Head of Bentley: In our school, it feels like I very rarely need to inspire inclusion – it’s written into our DNA. Each person here, especially in the Sixth Form, has a common respect and understanding of each other that is increasingly difficult to find. Everyone here knows what the others are going through and is there to offer support whenever it is needed. I’d like to thank all of the students, teachers and staff that have supported me along the way whether in academia, social life or general blues. I will strive to make QEGS the remarkable place it has been to me, for many others.

Head of Cave: Getting everyone to take part in house activities is a challenge that has always been difficult to overcome because it’s not everyone’s thing. But I think that it has become very important to inspire as many people as possible to get involved as in this way, boys will see friends on the pitches or at a quiz, and want to be included in this. Therefore by making each event as appealing as possible and targeting different boys, we can get everyone to contribute to the competition. For me, it is a case of getting as many people down to the events as possible as well as making sure people see the reward out of taking part.

A big thanks to our fantastic Sixth Form students for taking on leadership roles, emphasising how each has the power to make a difference in building a more inclusive school environment. Together, we can ensure that everyone feels they belong, paving the way for a brighter future for all. If you are interested in a student leader position, be sure to talk to your form tutor about opportunities.
