QEGS Advance in National Cup After Thrilling Victory Over Hill House

10th October 2024
QEGS came back from behind to advance to the next round of the National Cup.

QEGS secured a hard-fought win in the Continental Tyres National Schools Cup against Hill House in a match defined by physicality, mental toughness, and composure. In wet and rainy conditions, both teams sought a strong start, with Hill House quickly taking a 6-0 lead through two penalties right in front of the QEGS posts. However, the visitors responded as they began to assert their driving maul, with captain Jack Bailey powering over from short range to narrow the gap to 6-5.

Hill House extended their lead with another penalty before QEGS took the lead for the first time. A perfectly timed pass from Bailey sent Charlie Rust bursting through the defence to score under the posts, with Lance Barker converting to make it 12-9. Before the half, Hill House bounced back, using their powerful ball carriers to wear down QEGS and score twice, taking a 21-12 lead into the break.

As has been a hallmark of this QEGS team, they produced a brilliant second-half display. There were no bones about it, their backs were against the wall and facing (with where these boys want to go) an early exit in the National Cup. QEGS, however, turned the tide. Barker’s pinpoint kicking, including a crucial 50-22, helped pin Hill House in their own half. QEGS’ game management shone as they scored 18 unanswered points: another try each for Bailey and Rust, with Barker adding two penalties and a conversion.

Although Hill House narrowed the gap with a late try, QEGS held firm in a nail-biting finish to secure a 30-26 victory. The match ended in jubilant scenes, with players, staff, and parents celebrating together, grateful for the fantastic support they received throughout the game—support that may have made all the difference.

The win caps off an unbeaten half-term for the 1st XV, who now turn their focus to the St Joseph’s National Tournament during the holidays.

Well done, lads!

Mutual respect from both teams following a brilliant Cup encounter!
