QEGS cruised into the next round of the National Schools Cup with a commanding 35-3 win over Hymers College. In a match defined by disciplined defense and clinical finishing, QEGS delivered a performance that set the tone for their cup campaign.
The game began with both teams making early errors, largely driven by strong defensive efforts on both sides. However, QEGS broke the deadlock with a moment of brilliance, as slick passing out wide gave winger Mackenzie a clear 40m run to score. The momentum quickly shifted further in QEGS’ favor when full-back Hunter and centre Walsh combined after a turnover, freeing Mackenzie once more. This time, Mackenzie selflessly passed inside to supporting scrum-half Deacon, extending the lead to 14-0.
Hymers responded with a well-struck penalty to make it 14-3, but QEGS regained control before the break. A powerful try from Rust took the score to 21-3, giving the home side a comfortable cushion at halftime.
During the break, Mr. Cook urged his team to focus on maintaining possession, which proved effective as both teams traded strong defensive stands for much of the second half. However, QEGS continued to capitalize on their chances, with Gibson scoring late on, and Deacon crossing once more to seal a comprehensive 35-3 victory.
QEGS will now face St Peter’s this weekend in a crucial fixture ahead of their next-round clash with GSAL. A solid result like this sets the team up perfectly for the challenges ahead.
