QEGS made a memorable debut in senior football with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Bootham in the cup. It was a historic day for the school, as the first-ever Senior Football team took to the field, and excitement filled the air as players, peers, and supporters gathered at the Senior Gamesfield.
On a windy but dry afternoon, QEGS started strong, displaying impressive ball movement and intricate play, though without much goal-scoring threat early on. As the first half progressed, Bootham, with a well-drilled squad that had been playing together since Year 7, began to assert themselves, quickly netting two goals to take a 2-0 lead.
However, QEGS refused to back down. Substitute Akondu I. made an immediate impact, scoring twice in as many minutes to bring the game level by halftime. With confidence soaring, QEGS continued to dominate in the second half, adding two more goals, including a calmly taken penalty from Liam S. The match ended in a hard-fought 4-3 victory for QEGS.
Special recognition goes to captain Harrison M., who was named Man of the Match for his commanding performance in midfield.
With this fantastic win, the team now sets their sights on Ackworth next week as they await their next cup opponents. Well done, boys, on a fantastic afternoon of football!
