Classics

Ethos of the Department

Classics at QEGS is a thriving and lively subject, encompassing the language, history and culture from the Classical periods of Greece and Rome. The Department aims to enthuse pupils and staff in learning about what the Romans and Greeks said and did, and how this informs society and culture today. We are known for the variety and liveliness of our classroom teaching, and also our commitment to Classics outside the classroom.

We teach pupils throughout the school, beginning with Classical Civilisation in the first term of Year 7, continuing with Latin into Years 8 and above, Greek from Year 10 onwards, and both Latin and Classical Civilisation A levels in the Sixth Form.

We incorporate the best of modern teaching methods, including extensive use of ICT, into a solid base of language and literature learning. From the poetry of Virgil to stories about Odysseus, from the pluperfect tense to the assassination of Julius Caesar, from gladiators to Greek philosophy, all of life is here.
