A highly valued aspect of a boy’s development, Drama provides an introduction to the stage and enables boys to explore characters and situations, develop their imaginations and learn performance skills.

Boys in Reception are introduced to drama through structured play and role play. For many, the annual Nativity plays in Centenary House are their first introduction to performing themselves, and the eagerly anticipated events in Centenary House Hall are a perfect start to involvement in the dramatic life of QEGS for our youngest pupils.

Throughout the year all age groups from Reception to Year 6 take part in a stage production, encouraging teamwork, developing language skills and social interaction and providing valuable experience in drama and musical performance.

Drama has natural links to English, through language, literature and poetry. The annual Speaking and Reading Competition involves all boys from Year 3 upwards, giving the opportunity for individual performance. There are theatre group visits, and across the year groups music and visual arts combine with drama in assemblies throughout the year.

The Year 6 summer production involves the whole year group and is the culmination of the boys’ time in the Junior School. Stunning scenery, costumes and scripts peppered with subtle humour come together in highly entertaining performances full of colour and action. Recent plays have included ‘Sweeney Todd’, Jekyll and Hyde’ and ‘Treasure Island’.

School productions benefit from the use of QEGS Senior School venues, with both the QE Hall and the Elizabeth Theatre equipped with high quality sound and lighting equipment.

By encouraging imagination and self-discipline Drama unlocks a boy’s hidden talents and potential that may otherwise not be seen in the normal course of a day. But above all, it is fun!
