Year 5 Pupils Explore Science at Annual SPLATS Event

11th June 2026

This Tuesday and Wednesday, our school hosted Year 5 pupils from across the Wakefield area for the annual SPLATS (Students Presenting, Learning and Teaching Science) days.

The visiting primary school children took part in six hands-on experiments, all delivered by a specially trained group of our Year 10 students. The activities covered a great mix of practical science, including exploding pop tubs, solar circuits, and the competition of racing hand-made rollers—making it an engaging and memorable learning experience for the Year 5 participants.

The SPLATS initiative continues to be a great success for both the young visitors and our older students. Designed to develop presentation and leadership skills, the program has once again received very positive feedback from everyone involved.

Reflecting on the days, our Year 10 student teachers shared how the experience significantly “improved my confidence and solidified my knowledge,” with one noting that it “helped me understand how to explain well.” Another student concluded, “it proves that you can do anything with the right motivation.”

We are very proud of our Year 5 guests for their excellent participation and our Year 10 students for their leadership and mentorship. This year’s event once again demonstrated our commitment to encouraging a practical interest in science and developing confident learners.
