Reduce,Reuse and Recycle: Year 5 Visit Wakefield Recycling Centre

12th February 2026

In Year 5, our Humanities curriculum has been focused on a global concern: Sustainability. This term, pupils have been exploring what it means to be globally responsible citizens, investigating how we can all contribute to a greener future by being more aware of how we use the world’s natural resources.

To bring these important lessons to life, year 5 visited the Wakefield Recycle Centre for an invaluable hands-on learning experience. The trip was designed to help pupils understand how communities are actively responding to the environmental challenges facing our planet.

During the visit, pupils participated in immersive workshops to investigate where our natural resources come from, the impact of extracting them for human consumption, and the vital importance of managing our waste.

A highlight of the day was a guided tour of the recycling plant itself. Pupils saw firsthand the complex, high-tech systems in place to manage waste and convert it back into useful resources and energy.

This experience perfectly reinforced the overarching theme of the topic: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. It was a powerful reminder of the role we all play in protecting the future of our planet, empowering our pupils to make sustainable choices every day.
