Fieldwork, Forests, and Flamborough Seals: A-Level Geography in Action

13th February 2026

They say Geography is best learned with boots on the ground, and our Year 12 Geographers certainly proved that last week! Thirty one students headed to North Yorkshire for a week of immersive study at the Cranedale Field Centre, trading the classroom for the rugged beauty of the Dalby Forest and the Scarborough coastline.

The trip was a true test of grit. Practising fieldwork for their A-level non-examined assessment, students faced biting windchills at Bridestones, but their spirits remained high throughout. The academic skills shown by our students was equally impressive: from measuring carbon sequestration in the forest to analysing the socio-economic impacts of rural rebranding in Malton. At the coast, the study of beach profiles was punctuated by the spectacular sight of hundreds of seals at Flamborough Head.

This trip marked a significant milestone as one of the first outings for our new mixed Sixth Form cohort. The sense of teamwork and shared discovery was evident, making it a truly rewarding experience for both staff and students. All our geographers truly enjoyed their time at Cranedale, making long lasting memories and also delving deeper into the Geography Curriculum.
