At Wakefield Grammar School Foundation, we understand that scholarships can transform lives and create a lasting impact for our Scholars. We are dedicated to investing in the education and growth of talented individuals, with the goal of accelerating their development and helping them achieve their fullest potential.
Each year, a number of students entering Year 7 and Year 12 who demonstrate academic merit benefit from bursaries and scholarships. Admission is based on their performance in the entrance exam and personal interview, with bursaries and scholarships awarded on an individual basis.
A number of means tested bursaries are available to students joining Year 7 or Year 12 covering up to 75% of their school fees. Our bursaries are offered to students who rank highly in the entrance exam or have excellent GCSE grades (Year 12 bursaries) and whose families meet our financial criteria to ensure that a wide range of students have the opportunity to attend our schools.
To apply for a bursary, please tick the appropriate box on the application form as you apply. We will contact you to request further documentation to support your application.
Applicants who qualify for a bursary will be advised of the value of their award at the time of a school place being offered.
Each year, our school awards a number of academic scholarships to the brightest students entering our Senior Section and Sixth Form. These scholarships are not only a recognition of individual achievement but also an opportunity to broaden horizons and inspire students to go “beyond the syllabus.” Through our scholarship program, students gain access to a variety of enrichment opportunities that challenge them academically as they progress toward their external examinations.
10 academic scholarships each year are awarded to students who perform best in the examinations on our Assessment Day.
In addition, a fully funded place is awarded to the top performing student who qualifies for a 75% foundation award. This is our Hepworth Knott Scholarship.
There are a number of scholarships available for students joining the Sixth Form. Scholarships are awarded to students each year who perform very highly in an exam paper in their chosen subject. There are separate assessments, detailed below, for Music, Art and Sport scholarships. If you wish to apply for a scholarship, please contact our friendly admissions team by telephone on 01924 373943 or by email: admissions@wgsf.net.
John Radcliffe attended QEGS in the 1660s and went on to be a pre-eminent man of medicine in Restoration England (hence the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford.) These scholarships, named in his honour, are awarded to students who perform particularly strongly in the examinations on our Assessment Day and subsequent interview with the Headmaster.
A number of scholarships are available for students entering the Sixth Form, named in honour of Sir Henry Savile and his family, who played a pivotal role in founding the school in 1591. These scholarships can be awarded at two key stages, recognising exceptional academic achievement in public examinations.
The first stage rewards students who achieve a high number of top grades at GCSE, granting them the title of Savile Scholars throughout their Sixth Form studies. This recognition serves as a springboard for outstanding A-Level performance and progression to top universities.
The second opportunity to earn an honorary Savile Scholarship comes with A-Level results, designed to reward later academic bloomers. The current threshold is set at A*AA (or equivalent) at A-Level. Both groups of scholars have their names proudly engraved on our honours board in the main reception and can reference this academic distinction in their UCAS applications, school references, CVs, and future employment applications.
