Diversity and Inclusion Champion, Ms Harries launched the theme in an assembly highlighting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the crucial role that Black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mrs Harries shone a spotlight on the life and journey of author Malorie Blackman OBE, discussing her life.\u00a0 Malorie is a former Children\u2019s Laureate and has published over seventy books, most notably her \u2019Noughts and Crosses\u2019 book series, available to read at the library! \u00a0 We listened to students: Wara, Zoya, Amaya, and Simhita, as they read out poems written by Malorie in childhood and adulthood.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We will also celebrate the Notting Hill Carnival with a mask competition - where forms across Wakefield Girls\u2019 will be working together and displaying their creativity by constructing a beautiful and eye-catching decorative headdress or mask. We can\u2019t wait to see all of the entries and find out the winner, announced at the end of the month.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Black History Month organisation is running a National Poetry Competition, which we encourage our students to enter. This year\u2019s competition focuses on inspirational black women, both famous and in our own lives.
