GEM Lecture with BBC Presenter Amy Garcia

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Amy Garcia (OG) of BBC Look North presented a GEM Lecture to Yr. 10 girls.

The event was a great insight into local news reporting and the collection of news stories.

Amy presents BBC Look North news at 6.30pm every weekday and has recently been awarded the Best BBC Regional Presenter award.

Amy highlighted a number of high profile stories she had reported on, ranging from the Manchester “attack” to the appointment of Yorkshire’s Joe Root as the England test cricket captain.

The girls were interested to know of Amy’s Wakefield roots, the work she undertook in her family business and the unrelenting support she has received from her parents throughout her broadcasting career, initially as a presenter on children’s TV to more recently moving into news and current affairs.

It was particularly interesting to hear her thoughts on how Look North is regarded as the “eyes and ears” of the local community and how much affinity viewers have with it. For example, the viewing figures “shot up during last autumns “Children in Need” when it was feared co presenter Harry Gration may have to withdraw from the “sofa push” because of a back injury!!!!

Thank you very much Amy for speaking and inspiring the girls.
