At QEGS, we would like the boys to develop a love of reading and to read for pleasure - both at school and at home.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To celebrate World Book Day 2023, the school organised a wide range of exciting activities for the boys to take part in.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the weeks preceding World Book Day, the boys were invited to take part in a House competition which involved building a scene from a book using Lego. This was a joint competition, involving boys from both Junior and Senior Sections. The overall winner of the competition was Year 6 student, Harry B (Cave), who created a Lego model depicting Macbeth\u2019s final battle with Macduff. Harry\u2019s attention to detail was phenomenal and he was a deserved winner of the competition. In second place was Ethan K-C (Year 4, Freeston), who was inspired by Daniel Defoe\u2019s book, Robinson Crusoe. Ethan\u2019s Lego creation included a campfire, a rowing boat and two hungry-looking sharks. Theo L\u2019s (Year 5, Savile) portrayal of Julia Donaldson\u2019s \u2018The Smartest Giant in Town\u2019 was highly commended and just missed out on a top 3 spot.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On World Book Day itself, the boys arrived at school wearing costumes inspired by some of their favourite adjectives. There were some fantastic costumes on display, with the boys thinking creatively about how best to represent their chosen adjective.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We also held the final of this year\u2019s Speaking and Reading Competition on World Book Day. All boys in the Junior Section took part in this competition, with two boys from each class advancing to the final. The standard of performance in this year\u2019s competition was incredibly high. Guest judge, Adam Cunis, was amazed with how confident the boys were and had a really difficult job of selecting a winner in each category.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<strong>Year group winners were:\u00a0<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Year 3 - Harry G<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Year 4 - Horacio W<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Year 5 - Rahim G<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Year 6 - Raamis Z<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The overall winners of the competition were Horacio and Rahim. Horacio\u2019s reading of Robert Frost\u2019s poem \u2018The Road Not Taken\u2019 was absolutely outstanding and Rahim\u2019s speech writing and public speaking skills were exceptional.
