Local Y5 pupils ‘SHINE’ and enjoy ‘Serious Fun on Saturdays’

Year 5 pupils from Heath View Academy, Greenhill Primary, St. Michael’s CE Academy and Flanshaw J&I spent Saturday morning excitedly engaging in building fizzing volcanoes and tackling chocolate-based Maths challenges!

Not your run-of-the-mill Saturday, but another session as part of the ‘Serious Fun on Saturdays’ funded through SHINE – a leading educational charity whose focus is social mobility through education.

WGHS and QEGS are the first schools in West Yorkshire to be awarded a ‘Serious Fun on Saturdays’ contract, providing a major opportunity for deserving yet less fortunate children in and around Wakefield to further their educational development and enjoy an innovative and exciting range of lessons.

These lessons have to date included Pizza Construction, High-Speed Pantomime, Tres Porci Pavi (Latin), Music and this week’s activities were equally as exciting! The programme will culminate on 11 March with a Celebration Day, marking all the achievements and skills developed by the 36 attendees over the 11 sessions.

What makes this scheme so unique is the fabulous role the ten Year 12 Mentors from both schools have played in organising and delivering the sessions, alongside our specialist staff. They have been unwaning in their enthusiasm and have acted as excellent role models to these youngsters, allowing them to talk about a love of learning and aspirations for the future. Above all, they have demonstrated first hand that it is ‘cool to be clever’.
