The standards of the school Bake Off get better every year – and 2019 was no different!
The finalists this year were Oliver and Sam, who were challenged to bake a beautiful Mary Berry latticed treacle tart (you can find the recipe here).
A two hour timeframe was going to be tricky, given that the boys had to make their own pastry, filling and do the delicate lattice work – but they both rose to the challenge!
So, after numerous questions for Mrs Spawforth and The Bake Off theme tune in the background, our contestants got to it! Oliver and Sam both read the instructions very carefully and, with very little help from Mrs Spawforth, worked their way through the recipe, particularly taking time and care when doing their lattice work.
After roughly half an hour in the oven, the tarts were ready to come out and cool down before the big taste test!
As always, Mrs Gray judged the competition blind. It was incredibly close, with the tarts tasting almost exactly the same! However, in Bake Off there can only be one winner! Due to a slightly ‘soggy bottom’, Sam narrowly missed out on first place. Therefore, the 2019 Bake Off winner is Oliver! Congratulations Oliver and a huge well done to both boys for taking part – there was stiff competition, with 25 boys entering altogether!
